    Battery replacement

My first 4X4 was a 1990 Isuzu Trooper which could climb trees if necessary. I bought it new, and carried out regular PM, and even took it in to the dealer while under warranty. It did not leak fluids, over heat, or show any signs of other problems. Then one day, I and my partner were out...

    Battery replacement

No. Jeep does things pretty much correctly on the Wrangler. No worries about having to notify the system the battery is a replacement or any of the other nonsense that some of the "smarter" vehicles require these days. Just, as the others say, pay attention to the order of disconnecting and...

    Rear License Plate Holder

"Extra five minutes," there you go, just like I said. Us old guys don't even know whether we can buy green bananas or not.

    Rear License Plate Holder

There are lot of mods for the rear license plat holder. The tricky part is that many either disregard a light over the plate which, at least some, states require - California does. Many also assume you'll dismount your spare. You can find them everywhere from eBay, Rugged Ridge, and Extreme...

    OBD2 error codes U1118 AND U1119

If you are not experiencing any issues with how the Jeep operates, I would be wondering if the codes are not left over codes from a previous repair, possibly even triggered by the repair, if some connection was interrupted while the engine was operated. I would consider clearing the codes if...

    Birds nesting on my Jeep

When I was a teenager we used to go out dove hunting, and also quail. There's definitely not much meat, but the real point is the bacon and wild rice.

    Oil Level, Overfilled?

One possible reassurance is that oil forms a films, so a relatively small amount can make what looks like a huge stain. I can understand that problem with no garage. I do have one, but the driveway is really narrow with houses on either side, and mine is brick clad as well. The development I...

    Birds nesting on my Jeep

Buy some bacon and wild rice. Wait until the dove show up, pot them and then have a taste treat: baked dove wrapped in bacon and stuffed with wild rice and oregano.

    Oil Level, Overfilled?

If the photographs are in temporal order you are probably seeing oil draining to the pan. The last two show what looks like a proper level. The oil would be warm, so the level would reduce a little as it cools. So, you could have had the engine overfilled. The amount is listed as 6 quarts...

    Dual Battery Questions

There is a chance that battery will generate either hydrogen or hydrogen sulfide - I forget which. But if the battery is old and has problems, it can vent gas which is explosive. If the contact, usually ground, is a little loose, then a single spark can become really dramatic. I was taught...

How to get to gas tank top (fuel pump & evap connectors) in a 2018 Wrangler JKU without dropping the tank

Hardly any automotive engineers seem to consider working on the vehicles they design. I used to drive a 1960 Ford 1/4-ton with a straight 6. I could climb over the fender, straddle the front axle and work on anything in the engine compartment. Definitely liked that truck but no good with a...

    Dual Battery Questions

I have one. Never needed for my driver, but have used it to help another driver. I prefer them to accidentally blowing up a battery. I seen that happen to my dad long ago, and once to someone I tried to help.

    Gunk in Radiator

Seems reasonable. If your fluids all look good presently, then hopefully what you see around the radiator cap is history.

    Gunk in Radiator

You clearly have a leak between you radiator circulation and one or more other systems. If you have an automatic transmission, and it circulates transmission fluid through a cooler housing that transfer heat to the radiator, that could be the problem. If you have an oil cooler that does the...

J-Scan tire change broke speedometer and threw lots of codes

The fellow I bought the Mustang from rebuilt another, to which he added the Cougar rear panel and brake lights, and the dashboard. They have the same frame, so swapping body elements is fairly easy. It was a beautiful job for about two months, then it encountered an idiot driving at night, in...

J-Scan tire change broke speedometer and threw lots of codes

I worked for fellow up until 2018 who has a classic Camaro he religiously starts up and drives around the block every weekend he's home. I don't recall the year, but the body style is probably late '60s or early '70s. "Cherry".

J-Scan tire change broke speedometer and threw lots of codes

That was in the early '70s. You probably couldn't fit a computer in a car. That Mustang had no electronics at all except in the radio, which never did work. The engine was strictly vacuum feed back controls with the sole exception of the thermostat, and maybe the tachometer. I wish I still...

J-Scan tire change broke speedometer and threw lots of codes

Back "in the day" working on a '68 Mustang, we used a stopwatch and mile posts on US 50. None of us had thought about things like tire size changing the speed at the same RPM until a CHP patrolman explained. We didn't even get a ticket because he had a Mustang at home.

Yep. Mostly you can look up the diameter, and the rest of the technical details.

J-Scan tire change broke speedometer and threw lots of codes

The tire industry for some reason sometimes refers to circumference as "Roll out" - https://ntwonline.com/tire-shop-talk/revolutions-per-mile-chart/. The chart makes the same point I was making. The circumference of a tire is to a degree affected by the load and inflation pressure, but that's...
